Tasting Wine at Avennia in Woodinville

On a recent Spring afternoon, we headed into the Avennia tasting room in Woodinville to check it out (and to taste some wine of course!) Sunlight streamed through the windows, showcasing the beautiful tasting room design and wood-tinged modern decor.

The tasting room manager, Andrew, talked to us about Avennia’s winemaking process and their current wines. We’re always so impressed by the education that tasting room staff have gone through, and their passion and knowledge of the Washington wine industry and wines in general.

Avennia is the Roman name for the city of Avignon in southern France.

The Walter Clore Wine and Culinary Center named Avennia one of the Rising Stars of Washington. You can read an interview with winemaker Chris Peterson at Washington Wine Blog and at Seattle Dining. Chris Peterson was named Seattle Magazine’s Winemaker of the Year for 2017 as part of the 12th annual Washington Wine Awards.

The winemaker, Chris Peterson, was the first graduate of Walla Walla Community College’s Enology and Viticulture program. He worked for years at DeLille Cellars (you can listen to a podcast for more info on his journey from DeLille to Avennia here). He’s also the winemaker for Passing Time Winery.

Carrie started off her tasting with the Oliane Sauvignon Blanc, and immediately determined to buy a bottle for home.

We especially enjoyed the Arnaut, a Syrah from the Boushey Vineyards.

Jen ended up purchasing an Arnaut to take home, and Carrie’s red wine selection was the Sestina.

The tasting lineup included Valery (a Bordeaux blend), Sestina (another Bordeaux blend), Oliane (Sauvignon Blanc), Arnaut (a Syrah), Justine (a Southern Rhone blend), Gravura (another Bordeaux blend) and Le Corbeau (a Syrah from Discovery Vineyard).

We definitely recommend this elegant tasting room and intriguing Bordeaux style wines for your next Woodinville wine tasting experience.

Avennia is located at 19255 Woodinville-Snohomish Road NE, Suite #1 – Woodinville, WA 98072. They’re open daily from 11am to 5pm, staying open until 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
