Our Afternoon at Woodinville’s Obelisco Estate Winery

Carrie and I recently met up to taste some Woodinville wine with our friend Valerie, who was celebrating her birthday. We decided to tour Apple Farm Village and visit Obelisco Estate Winery  Here is a picture of the beautiful lineup we were thrilled to try.

Carrie loved this 2014 BDX Cabernet Sauvignon, a  75% Cabernet / 25% Malbec blend. The nose had notes of cherry and blackberry and spices, with a smooth mouthfeel.  This delicious Red Mountain Cab was one I took home to let age for a few years before opening.

Friday and Saturday evenings starting at 5pm, Obelisco hosts live music! This is the perfect time of year to head over and enjoy wines by the glass and bottle, plus small plates.  Check their events page here for a list of upcoming performers.

Our wine expert who chatted with us on this day was Rita, who was very friendly and helpful. She told us about the history of winemaking at Obelisco and how the staff always loves to pour a glass of “Betsy’s Red” for owner Betsy Long. Betsy and her late husband, John Long began making wine in Napa Valley in the 1970s before setting out to retire in Gig Harbor Washington.  Soon after, John discovered Red Mountain and they started Obelisco.

This 2015 Malbec is another that will age well for the next several years. Gm and Winemaker Ken Abbott and winemaker Ali Mayfield have created this French style Malbec that was creamy rather than spicy. I always enjoy tasting 100% Malbec varietals!

Obelisco is known for its rich, red wines. Although the 30-acre vineyard (located on the southwest slope of Red Mountain) is perfect for producing the Bordeaux style vintages that the Red Mountain terroir is known for, they do bottle one white wine per year.  It is a Sauvignon Blanc from Sagemoor vineyards (currently sold out).

Another thing that I find very appealing about this tasting room is the amount of space that it offers for guests to sit or chat and mingle.  I love the mix of comfy leather club chairs and table seating, that would be perfect for small groups or a romantic date night!

This 2015 III Nefer was delicious and it is no surprise to me that is has won double gold for being best of class in Cabs at the 2018 Seattle wine awards. This special wine was smooth but complex and I really loved it.

Carrie and I both love this wrap-around patio with ample seating, so we stopped to film a short live video for our Instagram feed.  (Follow us @woodinvillewineblog for more!) It is also the perfect spot to sip wine and watch the bustle of Woodinville’s Hollywood District pass by. Also worth noting, the Apple Farm Village offers plenty of parking!

Every experience I have had visiting this tasting room has been so enjoyable! I would definitely recommend giving Obelisco a visit on your next wine tasting adventure. You can find them at the Apple Farm Village: 14525 145th Ave NE, Suite 121, Woodinville, WA 98072.

Apple Farm Village tasting room hours are as follows: M-Th: 1-6pm; Fri-Sat: 12-8pm; Sun: 12-5pm

Enjoy private Barrel Room tastings and winemaker dinners at Obelisco’s Warehouse District tasting room.  Locate at 19495 144th Ave NE B-220, Woodinville, Wa.  Hours are: Sat 12-5pm, Sun 1-4pm

Visitors to Leavenworth (On my list for 2019!) can find Obelisco Estates in the “Wine Cellar”, open seven days a week.

I think you will have a fantastic time at Obelisco! – ~Jen
