A Friendly Sunday Wine Tasting with Allison at Pomum Cellars

I was very excited to finally enjoy a wine tasting at Woodinville’s Pomum Cellars.  Allison, Pomum’s tasting room manager was super friendly and shared lots of wine knowledge with us, which we love. I was instantly so impressed with the newly remodeled space and shamelessly ran my hands along the surface of this beautiful table.

Pomum Cellars is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Javier and Shylah Alfonso. Javier is originally from the renowned Riber del Duero region in Spain. Most of Pomum’s Bordeaux and Syrah wines are sourced from Konnowac Vineyard, which was recently acquired by the winery and is now their Estate Vineyard. We learned that there are plans to open a new tasting room there in three years (yay!).

In addition to Pomum, Alfonso also produces wines under his Idilico label.  Idilico, is named after a specific bull who was pardoned by his matador and won back his freedom.

This line of wines highlights Spanish varietals and was previously only available in restaurants.  Starting in January 2020, you will be able to taste Idilico wines in Pomum’s Woodinville tasting room.  If the staff is pouring one of the Idilico varietals in the tasting room, it will be available for purchase.

The tasting lineup at Pomum Cellars started off with a 2016 Riesling, full of citrus and apricot aromas. For our second pour, we sampled a 2017 Chardonnay.  I typically don’t consider a Chardonnay one of my favorite wines to drink, however, I did enjoy the creamy mouthfeel and the fact that it was not super oaky.

Allison shared with us that Javier imported Tempranillo vines from Spain which, after a 3-year quarantine at UC Davis, were planted at Dineen vineyard. This may have added some years to the process behind the 2016 Tempranillo, but the result is a balanced, smooth wine that is so good! Carrie took a bottle of it home to add to her cellar. I took home a bottle of the 2016 Syrah. I loved the rich notes of chocolate and the soft, lovely finish.

Carrie and I were excited to be able to taste the Graciano from Idilico. Graciano is a Spanish grape that grows particularly well in Washington State.  This varietal was big, bold and peppery and I enjoyed it.

This 2016 Red Blend is a terrific Bordeaux style wine and we love that it is Cabernet Sauvignon dominant (43%) but also has 32% Cabernet Franc! The other varietals that make up this blend are Malbec (12%) and Petite Verdot (9%) and Malbec (4%).  I brought home a bottle and later enjoyed it with friends, who commented that they enjoyed its fruit-forward qualities and lasting finish.

If you have been to Pomum Cellars in the past, stop in to check out their gorgeous remodel. If you have not visited them before, we highly recommend that you do. The tasting room is open for wine tastings on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5, and by appointment.  They are located at 18512 142nd Ave NE, Woodinville WA 98072.

Thanks to Allison for the wonderful service and for sharing Woodinville wine with us!
